Sensitivity

Take a moment to answer the poll on the top left.

I have been struggling this week with what to do for a fun activity for Father's Day Sunday, as well as what to have the children sing in Sacrament meeting on Father's Day. Almost one year ago three siblings in my primary lost their father. He was captured by swift water in a river in the wilderness of Alaska, and his body was never found. It has been so difficult for their mother to understand why. It still breaks my heart to see the pain in their faces.

After a lot of thought and prayer, I have decided that for Sacrament Meeting on Father's Day, we will go with "Teach Me to Walk in the Light", instead of the traditional father's day songs. Now I just need to find a dad/teacher/parents to sing the second verse.

What do you think? Comments and insight would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Bridgette

  1. That sounds like it will be really special, especially if you can find a father to sing with them.

  2. What about your Bishopric? Thank you for all your hard work. I have used your ideas every week and my kids have loved it! I didn't get to the 4th articel of Faith last week because we were learning our Father's Day songs. But I used you idea on teaching it. The kids had a great time. I will be using your idea for the week as well! Thanks again! You have been my lifesaver!

  3. I appreciate your thoughtfulness about Father's Day. I grew up in a single-parent home and my mom also didn't have a strong father-figure. It was the only Sunday in the whole year we ditched church. (And we ALWAYS attended all four sessions of conference, twice a year) because it was that hard on us.

Another situation that's quite prevalent for the children in our primary is that they are raised, mostly raised or brought to church by their grandparents.

I love the song you chose and think you could honor men and their priesthood responsibilities by having some of the men )who commonly act in father-figure roles or exercise their priesthood for those who are without in their homes) sing the second verse. My mom always found me a priesthood holder I could turn to for advise and blessings.

  4. Teach Me to Walk is a beautiful, appropriate song for Father's Day. I think the fact that you are sensitive to the children in your primary and what they are going through is commendable.

  5. Amanda, Sherrie, Amber and ecuakim, thanks for all your kind words and positive comments.

I am really liking that Bishopric idea Sherrie. I wonder if they would do it? Hmmm...I'll ask the Bishop tomorrow. I am not out anything if he says no.

  6. I too love the idea that you have come up with for Fathers Day. My children were raise just by me and we have never attended fathers day for the very reason the we didn't want to be reminded that we were differant.....I love how you are always thinking about your children in primary....i love your ideas.... and love that you will share with us. This Fathers Day will be the first Fathers Day I will be attending since I will be leading in Sacrament Meeting in 19 years.

  7. Sounds like you have a good plan. Another option for a song on Father's Day in the future for a stiuation like that could be I Know My Father Lives. We all have a Heavenly Father.

p.s. My less than creative brain thanks you for all of your fabulous ideas!

  8. I love your blog. Thank you for all your great ideas! I have also struggled with how to handle Father's Day, as there are several sweet children in our primary without a father figure in the home. I've decided to teach the song FATHERS, but focus on the 3rd verse, which is all about our Heavenly Father and His love for us. Like someone else mentioned - we all have a Heavenly Father. :) Maybe this idea can help someone else now or in the future. I love your idea, too! Good luck, hope it goes well.

  9. I love your idea. My parents were divorced, the only ones in the ward, my dad lived in a different state so he was never there on Father's Day sunday. I never went to church that day so I wouldn't be the only child not up there singing.

  10. For the reasons already mentioned, I also decided to focus on Heavenly Father as well as earthly fathers. As part of a medley, we are singing the chorus to "Fathers", and focusing on how our Heavenly Father, although not physically here on earth, loves each of his children and does all he can to help guide and direct us back to him.
